Pinot Grigio is a white wine that has steadily increased in popularity every year since 2005. Formerly known as Pinot Gris, the variety has been around since the middle ages making it a stalwart of winemakers.
Even though Pinot Grigio is grown in many countries, both old and new world, it is associated mainly with Italy. However, as more and more winemakers from around the world are now growing this variety, this may well not be the case in future.

What does Pinot Grigio Wine taste like?
Pinot Grigio wine from Italy is considered to be a light-bodied wine, light in colour and has a crisp, refreshing flavour to it and the one we stock from Bella Modella is no exception to that.
It is often asked if pinot grigio is sweeter than chardonnay, the two wines have different characteristics. Chardonnay has a rich, full-bodied and buttery taste compared to the light crisp dry but refreshing taste you get from pinot grigio.
You should refrigerate this wine as it is best served chilled and will enhance the flavours. A serving temperature of 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit) should be perfect. Try not to serve the wine too warm or too cold as it will shadow the aroma and flavours. These wines are generally good for 5-7 days after opening, as long as they are stored in the fridge.
What do you drink Pinot Grigio with?
Pinot Grigio is an excellent complement to fish and goes exceptionally well with pasta dishes. The flavours complement each other well. It pairs well with light meals such as chicken, seafood and pasta dishes like spaghetti because the acid helps to balance rich sauces and slightly spicy foods. For this reason, you should avoid serving it with acidic dishes. Gruyère is the best cheese to pair with Pinot Grigio because it is sweet, salty and a little bit nutty in flavour.
Does Pinot Grigio Age Well?
Wine made from Pinot Grigio grapes are made to be enjoyed when released. They are ready for drinking as soon as you get them chilled to approx 9 degrees and have your spaghetti dish cooking. So really you shouldn’t think of storing this wine away in a cupboard or cellar for some special occasion. These wines are fresh, crisp and zesty, and over time these flavours will not improve.
Is Pinot Grigio a cheap wine?
Because Pinot Grigio can be bottled and on the market within 6-10 weeks after it has been fermented, it is often viewed as a more budget wine variety than many others. However, that should not detract you from the great flavour and the refreshing zesty taste making it a fantastic choice for a quick glass of wine in the summer after work!
